Girls Scouts of Eastern Washington & Northern Idaho is looking for a Head Cook for Beautiful Camp Four Echoes, Summer Resident Camp 2023.

The Head Cook will live on-site starting June 3rd to August 17th for the 2023 Camp Season - * Dates subject to change according to position.


$7,475.00 PLUS room & board for the camp season

Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho has been serving girls since 1937. Our Resident Camp operates at Camp Four Echoes, a council-owned property of over 200 acres near Worley, ID. Over 500 girls each summer ages 5-17 enjoy programs in STEM, arts and crafts, cooking, drama, swimming, boating, hiking, and other skill-building fun. Each session, girls lead the way by planning their own activities with their camper group. Each week has a theme and campers plan activities and meals related to that theme. Camp Four Echoes, a girl scout camp, is located on the wooded shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene. Six living units house 18-24 girls weekly. Each unit has flush toilets and running water, but no electricity. Meals are provided in a group setting in our central dining hall. We also have a staff lounge for your time off.

All staff live on-site starting in June through August 18th for the 2022 Camp Season - * Dates subject to change according to position.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Camp Director, the Head Cook is responsible for all aspects of food service including planning, purchasing, preparation, and leading the food service team in providing meals, snacks and “pack outs” for girls ages 5-17 and seasonal camp staff. This position is also accountable for the general safety and empowering the personal growth and skill development of the food service staff.  The Head Cook exhibits enthusiasm and patience while exemplifying the Girl Scout core values of honesty, caring, courage, and character.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION:

  • Attends to safety of any staff assisting in food preparation at all times; follows and instructs kitchen staff on procedures for incidents and emergencies
  • Leads and supervises the kitchen staff, including an assistant cook and kitchen aides; coordinating the group’s schedule and activities along with assists in formal evaluations of kitchen staff
  • Works with the Health Assistant to make sure allergies are accommodated for in the kitchen
  • Trains the kitchen staff in all aspects of running the camp food service program, including food safety, work place safety, proper use of equipment, inventory, meal planning/preparation and delivery, cleaning and food storage, allergies and special diets
  • In coordination with the Camp Director, creates a three-week rotating menu that includes healthy kid-friendly meals with additional options such as a salad bar and additional needs to accommodate special diets and allergies
  • Works to create a positive group culture through team-building and problem-solving activities
  • Attends and supports weekly in-service training, focuses on areas of food safety and develops additional food service skills
  • Models personal responsibilities such as conflict management, positive relationships, following rules, and respecting camp property
  • Follows and implements appropriate behavior management procedures when interacting with all campers
  • Completes and submits all paperwork in a timely and efficient manner including, food orders, receipts, menus, special diets and allergies, temperature charts, health inspections and evaluations
  • Exhibits punctuality and communication in time management, including daily and weekly breaks
  • Respects and follows the “Camp is for the camper” philosophy by attending to camper and camp needs first
  • Communicates with parents/caregivers, campers and staff regarding special diets, allergies and other food-related needs
  • Represents camp appropriately in the community and with parents by maintaining personal hygiene, following camp dress code, and communicating respectfully with campers, parents and other adults.
  • Actively participates in staff trainings, meetings, and camp closing activities, including but not limited to deep cleaning, lifting or moving equipment, taking out trash and closing inventory
  • Reports concerns and incidents to the Camp Director
  • Provides healthy meals to staff during staff training and post-camp clean up. Kitchen staff should be prepared to stay one day later than the other staff in order to finish clean up, storage and inventory.
  • Practices the Girl Scout Promise and Law with an inclusive attitude and a willingness to problem-solve
  • Follows all procedures and regulations according to the GSEWNI Council, GSUSA, and state and federal guidelines and laws and the American Camp Association
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Must be 21 years or older

Education/Experience:

  • Current First Aid & CPR certification
  • Current Idaho Food Handlers Card
  • Certify in ServSafe or provide proof of current certification
  • One (1) year experience in food-service
  • One (1) year experience in a supervisory role and demonstrates the ability to supervise other staff members, including giving appropriate feedback, providing a positive role model and addressing challenges quickly and professionally
  • Ability to grasp the landscape within an organization, show passion for working with Girl Scouts and the nonprofit environment and expertise in using various communication vehicles that engage girls, volunteers, parents, donors and the community
  • Willingness to subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout movement, including acceptance of the Girl Scout philosophy and willingness to maintain membership in the Girl Scouts USA

Physical Abilities: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to:

Regularly lift objects up 30 pounds, repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.  Climb, pull, stoop, kneel, crawl, twist and crouch while performing custodial duties.  Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time, up to 12 hours, and work in inclement weather.  Clearly see 20+ feet, with or without corrective lenses and differentiate between colors (no color blindness)
