Girls Scouts of Eastern Washington & Northern Idaho is looking for a Ropes Director for Beautiful Camp Four Echoes, Summer Resident Camp 2023 - Approximately $5,100.00 plus room and board for the camp season.  ENJOY time at the lake this summer!

All staff live on-site from June 7th to August 16th for the 2023 Camp Season - * Dates subject to change according to position.

Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho has been serving girls since 1937. Our Resident Camp operates at Camp Four Echoes, a council-owned property of over 200 acres near Worley, ID. Over 500 girls each summer ages 5-17 enjoy programs in STEM, arts and crafts, cooking, drama, swimming, boating, hiking, and other skill-building fun. Each session, girls lead the way by planning their own activities with their camper group. Each week has a theme and campers plan activities and meals related to that theme. Camp Four Echoes, a girl scout camp, is located on the wooded shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene. Six living units house 18-24 girls weekly. Each unit has flush toilets and running water, but no electricity. Meals are provided in a group setting in our central dining hall. We also have a staff lounge for your time off.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Ropes Director, the Ropes Specialist is responsible for planning and implementation of safe challenge course programs for campers ages 5-17 for an assigned group of campers. This position is also accountable for the general safety and empowering the personal growth and skill development of the participants in their group. The Ropes Specialist exhibits enthusiasm and patience while exemplifying the Girl Scout core values of honesty, caring, courage, and character.
 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION:

  • Assists in providing ten days of staff training prior to the arrival of campers, focusing primarily on instructing staff on how to plan and supports campers in all challenge programming activities
    • Leads the staff in several hours of group-building and challenge activities focusing on creating a functional team capable of increased empathy, communication and support. Culminate staff training with an opportunity to complete several elements on the camp challenge course
    • Leads the staff through the basics of a successful high ropes programs and how to support campers while in these program areas
  • Attends to safety of campers at all times; follow and instructs staff on procedures for incidents and emergencies that may occur during challenge programming
  • Works to create a positive group culture through team-building and problem-solving activities
  • Assists unit staff in scheduling and carries out weekly age-appropriate challenge programming requirements
  • Instructs Unit Staff on how to teach and encourages campers to progress in independent skills such as caring for equipment, proper use of supplies and equipment, clean up and following safety guidelines
  • Engages all campers in games, crafts, or other activities at all times(including during the girls’ down time, meals, all-camp activities, clean-up, etc.)
  • Participate in the facilitation of camp programming for assigned unit when not directly conducting archery or challenge course programming
  • Ensure challenge course areas are safe and fun for all participants
  • Engage campers who might not want to participate in challenge course programming
  • Create a safe and supportive space on the challenge course to ensure campers and staff can be successful in these programs
  • Attends all meals with campers in the dining hall or during cook-outs. Teaches and models table manners, appropriate meal conversation and positive social interactions
  • Instructs unit staff how to provide opportunities for girls to lead during all arts/crafts/nature activities
  • Models personal responsibilities such as conflict management, positive relationships, following rules, and respecting camp property
  • Follows and implements appropriate behavior management procedures when interacting with all campers
  • Completes and submits all paperwork in a timely and efficient manner
  • Exhibits punctuality and communication in time management, including daily and weekly breaks
  • Respects and follows the “Camp is for the camper” philosophy by attending to camper and camp needs first
  • Represents camp appropriately in the community and with parents by maintaining personal hygiene, following camp dress code, and communicating respectfully with campers, parents and other adults
  • Actively participates in staff trainings, meetings, and camp closing activities, including but not limited to deep cleaning, lifting or moving equipment, taking out trash and closing inventory
  • Reports concerns and incidents to Assistant Camp Director-Program
  • Practices the Girl Scout Promise and Law with an inclusive attitude and a willingness to problem-solve
  • Attends weekly scheduling meetings with Unit Leaders
  • Follows all procedures and regulations according to the GSEWNI Council, GSUSA, and state and federal guidelines and laws and the American Camp Association
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Must be 18 years or older

Education/Experience:

  • Current First Aid & CPR certification
  • Provide documentation of experience of training and leading challenge activities, including actual time on the challenge course
  • Possess or actively pursue Instructor certification in archery by a nationally recognized certifying body.
  • One (1) year experience working with girls ages 5-17 through camp, day care, or teaching.
  • Ability to grasp the landscape within an organization, show passion for working with Girl Scouts and the nonprofit environment and expertise in using various communication vehicles that engage girls, volunteers, parents, donors and the community
  • Willingness to subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout movement, including acceptance of the Girl Scout philosophy and willingness to maintain membership in the Girl Scouts USA

Physical Abilities: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to:

Regularly lift objects up 50 pounds, repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.  Climb, pull, stoop, kneel, crawl, twist and crouch while performing job duties.  Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time, up to 12 hours, and work in inclement weather.  Clearly see 20+ feet, with or without corrective lenses and differentiate between colors (no color blindness)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the:

  • Multi-Tasking Ability: ability to handle many diverse tasks/projects at one time; ability to prioritize and complete them on time.

Work Environment:   

While performing the essential duties/responsibilities of this job, the employee lives for up to 12 weeks in close proximity to others, including sharing living quarters, restrooms, laundry facilities and a common staff lounge. May only use personal electronics (such as computers, phones and other devices) only during personal designated breaks and out of sight of campers. Multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment is an integral part of this position, as is the ability to work with high-stress situations based on the nature of GSEWNI mission and daily work.
